Phytochemistry I is a core course for second-year pharmacy students that provides a comprehensive introduction to the chemical constituents of medicinal plants and their analytical evaluation. The course focuses on the principles and practical aspects of extraction, isolation, fractionation, and identification of phytochemicals, with emphasis on their pharmaceutical and therapeutic relevance.
Students will study conventional and modern extraction techniques, preliminary phytochemical screening, and a wide range of chromatographic methods including TLC, column chromatography, HPLC, and gas chromatography. The course also covers quality control and standardization of herbal drugs according to WHO and pharmacopoeial guidelines, along with an introduction to spectroscopic techniques used in phytochemical analysis. In addition, the biosynthetic pathways of major plant secondary metabolites are discussed to link plant metabolism with medicinal value and drug discovery.
By the end of the course, students will have a solid foundation in phytochemical analysis and quality assessment of herbal medicines, preparing them for advanced pharmacognosy, research, and pharmaceutical practice.
